Star Wars: Every Lightsaber Color in Canon and it's Meaning!

The Lightsaber

An elegant weapon, for a more civilized age.

When people think of Lightsaber colors, they most commonly think of the colors green, blue, and red, but the Canon Star Wars universe actually has a total of eight colors. Each of these colors have a different meaning, and are used by different individuals depending on their role in the universe, as well as the side of the force that they represent.

The Lightsabers consist of a plasma blade, powered by rare, force-attuned crystal called a Kyber crystal. This crystal can be found on many different planets throughout the Star Wars universe. Kyber crystals themselves are uncolored, but once found by a force user, they develop a color. The color that the crystal acquires is influenced by the users spiritual alignment, as well as some of their personality traits.

Blue

Blue Lightsabers, being the most common, made it's debut all the way back in 1977 during Star Wars: A New Hope. This color is associated with the Jedi and light side users, but is certainly not the only. The blue color is a representation of bravery and righteousness, this mostly aligns with the values of the Jedi.

This color was most notably used by people such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Kanan Jarrus, and Plo Koon.

Red

Red Lightsabers represent the Sith and Dark Side users. The blade gets its red color through a process called 'bleeding', which consists of a user flushing all of their hate, anger, suffering, and any other negative emotion into the crystal. This process is needed as the Sith or Dark Side user is unable to connect with the crystal like the Jedi, or a light side user.

This color is most notably used by people such as Darth Vader, Maul, Count Dooku, Kylo Ren, Assajj Ventress, and Darth Sidious.

Green

Green Lightsabers are the second most common color used by the Jedi. This color generally is associated with individuals who are highly attuned with the Force, possessing traits such as harmony, spirituality, and purity. This is why some of the most powerful Force users in the Star Wars universe used a green bladed lightsaber.

This color is most notably used by light side users such as Grandmaster Yoda, Luke Skywalker, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Kit Fisto.

Purple

Purple Lightsabers are extremely rare, but are also used by the Jedi. The purple blade, being a mixture of red and blue, is said to represent uncertainty and moral ambivalence, and that the user is tapped in to both the light and dark side of the force. The Purple blade first appeared in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, this was at the request of Samuel L. Jackson, whos favorite color is purple.

This color is most notably used by Jedi Master Mace Windu.

Yellow

Yellow Lightsabers are most commonly used by Jedi Temple guards, who carry double bladed sabers. The yellow blade is one of the most mysterious as very little is known about them. It is unclear if the blades were intentionally made yellow in order to distinguish the guards from other light side users, or if the users possess a specific number of traits to ensure the color.

This color is most notably used by Jedi Temple guards, as well as Rey, who crafted her own Lightsaber after the events of Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker.

Orange

Orange Lightsabers are the newest addition to the Star Wars Canon, this is due to the release of the canon game Jedi: Fallen Order. There is next to no information on this color as the color was a pre-order incentive. In the Expanded Universe, the orange blade was occasionally used by Dark Jedi or Sith.

White

White Lightsabers were used by former Jedi Ahsoka Tano during the Age of the Empire and after. According to Canon, Ahsoka acquired the Kyber crystals for her sabers after she defeated an inquisitor while she was in hiding after Order 66. The crystals acquired originally emitted a red blade, as the inquisitors were dark side users, but because of Ahsoka's mastery of the Force, she was able to purify them and restore them to a white color. The color ended up representing Ahsoka to a great deal, as she was not apart of the Jedi order, or the Sith.

Black

The Black Lightsaber, or better known as the Darksaber is a one of a kind blade, with an immense amount of history in the Star Wars universe. This saber was created by Tarre Vizsla, who was the first Mandalorian to be inducted into the Jedi order. Due to its storied history, it became a symbol of leadership among the Mandalorians. According to Mandalorian customs, the only way to obtain the Darksaber is to best the owner in combat.

We already broke down the extensive history of the Darksaber and why it's so significant. If you want to check that post out, click HERE.
